CUBIC BORON NITRIDE (CBN)

Ecotech Srl provides toolmakers with a choice of different Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)products to suit a wide range of applications.CBN is the second hardest material after synthetic diamond and is synthesised from hexagonal boron nitride under conditions similar to those used to produce synthetic diamond from graphite. In particular, CBN’s properties of high thermal stability and chemical resistance make it suitable for machining ferrous materials, an area where synthetic diamond abrasives are not normally employed.

POLYCRYSTALLINE DIAMOND (PCD)

Ecotech Srl provides a wide range of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) products to meet the demands of the precision cutting industries.
PCD consists of micron-sized synthetic diamond powders bonded together by sintering at high pressures and temperatures. It is produced on a cemented carbide substrate, using a source of ‘solvent metal catalyst’ to aid sintering, typically cobalt. This process renders the material electrically conductive, and as such, PCD may be electric-discharge machined – a critical attribute for the hardest known material. The integrally bonded carbide substrate also renders the composite brazeable, another critical attribute given that the major part of a cutting tool or drill bit is used solely for clamping, with the PCD material only located where it is used for cutting.

Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN)

Ecotech provides a range of Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) products for a range of specialist machining applications.

PCBN composites are produced by sintering micron CBN powders with various ceramics, to produce extremely hard and thermally stable tooling materials. Most PCBN materials are integrally bonded to a cemented carbide substrate. CBN is the second hardest material known after synthetic diamond, but has high thermal and chemical resistance properties.

About two thirds of all PCBN tools are used for the machining of hardened steels, offering a viable, more cost effective alternative to conventional grinding processes. Other applications are in the machining of hard, grey and high-strength cast iron, and cold and hot-work tool steels. The machining of nickel and cobalt-based superalloys is a significant and rapidly growing application area for PCBN.

SINGLE CRYSTAL SYNTHETIC DIAMOND

Ecotech Srl provides a range of Single Crystal Synthetic Diamond products, which are utilised for a wide range of applications, including mechanical, optical and electronic.
Our single crystal synthetic diamond products are produced by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) or high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) synthesis. Both manufacturing processes use tightly controlled growth conditions, and the material produced is then subject to equally stringent quality control procedures. The resulting single crystal synthetic diamond is an engineered synthetic material that is highly consistent and has predictable properties and behaviour. By contrast, natural diamond material varies significantly in key properties and requires careful selection. The single crystal synthetic diamond is then processed into geometrically regular shapes, and can be used for a range of applications, including mechanical applications (as a cutting tool, wire drawing die or dresser) or optical, electronic or detector applications.
Our single crystal synthetic diamond product range features:

  • HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) large single crystal synthetic diamond
  • CVD (chemical vapour deposition) synthetic diamond

POLYCRYSTALLINE CVD DIAMOND

Polycrystalline CVD synthetic diamond products are manufactured by a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process and are subject to tightly controlled growth conditions during manufacturing and equally stringent quality control procedures. The result of production is polycrystalline CVD diamond, an engineered material that is highly consistent and has predictable properties and behaviour required for cutting tool, wire drawing and dressing applications. By contrast, natural diamond material varies significantly in key properties and requires careful selection.
Our polycrystalline diamond products are used in cutting and dressing, optics, thermal, electrochemical and nuclear fusion applications.
